Books in Wartime

3tensesI’m currently reading Take Three Tenses by Rumer Godden. It was published in 1945, and my local library (bless them) has an original edition. It’s a small hardbound book, nearly mass market paperback size, but I didn’t think anything of it until I read the inside of the dust jacket.

I’m fascinated by this statement: “The size and the weight of books have increased steadily since the end of World War I; now, in World War II, the process must be reversed”. And now I’m wondering: How has the size of books fluctuated since then?
